Our blogpost in September was prescient it seems! This weekend’s Sunday Times magazine had the usual mix of articles about starting the New Year with good intentions but one of them stood out. Leading sleep scientist Matthew Walker has studied sleep for the last two decades – originally as a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and now as Professor of Neuroscience at the University of California at Berkeley. A self-confessed sleep obsessive he probably knows more about sleep that anyone else on the planet…
In his article for the Sunday Times Matthew Walker states “I was once fond of saying: ‘Sleep is the third pillar of good health, alongside diet and exercise.’ I have now changed my tune. Sleep is more than a pillar; it is the foundation on which the other two health bastions sit…”
He goes on to describe in some detail the effects of sleep deprivation, not missing a whole night, just missing an hour or two is devastating in health terms. He says that the results of his research are so scary that he has to be careful how he frames the facts: you can read the whole article on the Sunday Times website but the bottom line is that sleep is even more important than most of us know. As our recent blogpost graphic illustrated – sleep really is the foundation of good health.
Here at Gx Pillows we understand better than most the importance of sleep in regeneration – our pillows were designed with that purpose, to help everyone get comfortable to ensure the best possible night’s sleep to help the body recover from the stresses and strains of daily life.
If you want to make one simple beneficial change to your life in 2018 make sure you are getting enough sleep. Matthew Walker has ten top tips for getting a better night’s sleep – number three is making sure your bed is comfortable – most people think of the mattress first and are prepared to invest in a good one. In fact sleep comfort starts with the position of the head and neck – that’s the secret of the Gx Suspension PillowTM – we’ve developed it specifically to ensure comfort and support that lasts all through the night.
Here’s hoping you sleep better in 2018…
